Choosing a location for a family session in the Illawarra usually comes down to two things: the aesthetic you want and the logistics for your family. We are suffering no shortage of beautiful photo spots here, but as we move into the Autumn 2026 season, there is a clear trend toward multi-generational legacy sessions. These shoots involve grandparents, parents, and children, which means the location needs to be accessible, versatile, and manageable for different age groups.
In the Illawarra, we have the unique advantage of having the escarpment and the ocean within a 15-minute drive of each other. Plenty of pretty places for that beautiful picture with Nan and Pop. Here is a breakdown of the best spots for your 2026 autumn session.

1. The Wollongong Botanic Garden (Keiraville)
While it’s an obvious choice, the Botanic Garden remains the most reliable spot for “true” autumn colour in the region. Because the Illawarra is dominated by evergreens and coastal scrub, finding deciduous trees that actually turn red and orange can be a challenge. If you’re after those classic, warm, autumn vibes, the gardens have you covered.
A place for the whole family:
The garden offers a variety of micro-climates in one spot. You can get the classic autumn leaf look near the duck pond, but you also have the succulent garden for a more modern, architectural backdrop. For multi-generational groups, this is the most practical choice. There are paved paths for prams and wheelchairs, and plenty of seating for older family members if we need to take a break between setups.
Photographer’s Tip:
Aim for a weekday if possible. By April and May 2026, the gardens will be busy on weekends with weddings and other photographers. If we shoot on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon, we have much better access to the prime spots under the maples.

2. Killalea Regional Park (The Farm), Shell Cove
If your family style is more “boots and denim” than “Sunday best,” Killalea (locally known as The Farm) is the best coastal option. In autumn, the landscape here shifts from a vibrant green to a muted, straw-coloured gold.
The Aesthetic:
Unlike a flat beach, Killalea offers a massive scale. The rolling hills overlooking the Tasman Sea provide a sense of space that works perfectly for large extended families. It allows for “movement” shots-grandkids running through the grass or the whole family walking along the ridgeline.
Logistics:
It’s important to note that Killalea can be windy. In the autumn months, the southerly winds can be biting. I recommend this spot for families with older children who don’t mind a bit of a hike down toward the lagoon. It’s less ideal for those with limited mobility, but the visual payoff is some of the best coastal scenery in New South Wales.

3. Darkes Forest & Glenbernie Orchard
For a 2026 session that feels completely removed from the suburban sprawl, heading up the pass to Darkes Forest is worth the drive.
The Apple-Aisle Look:
Glenbernie Orchard offers a structured, graphic look you can’t get anywhere else in the Illawarra. The rows of apple trees create “leading lines,” a photography technique that naturally draws the eye toward the subjects in the centre of the frame. In autumn, the trees begin to thin out, letting in a soft, filtered light that is incredibly flattering for portraits.
Why it’s trending:
There is a move toward “Agri-tourism” photography-sessions that feel like an activity rather than a staged event. It keeps kids occupied (as they can actually look at the fruit and the trees) and results in much more candid, natural expressions. Note that this is private property, so booking ahead and paying a small site fee is part of the process.

4. Belmore Basin and the Blue Mile
Sometimes the best location is the one that represents the city’s identity. Belmore Basin, with its two lighthouses and historic stone harbour walls, is the quintessential Wollongong backdrop. It’s a great, accessible spot with plenty of pavements and flat ground. Parking can be a pain, so always allow a bit of buffer time so we don’t lose daylight before we get your family photos.
The 2026 Perspective:
We are seeing a resurgence in “urban heritage” shoots. Instead of just nature, families want the texture of the old salt-sprayed bricks and the harbour infrastructure. It feels grounded and timeless. If your family has lived in the Illawarra for generations, this is a perfect spot – and for those who’ve just arrived in our beautiful city, it’s a great place to lay roots.
Timing is Everything:
In autumn, the sun sets behind the Illawarra Escarpment quite early. This means the golden hour happens sooner than you think. At Belmore Basin, we lose the direct sun about 45 minutes before the actual sunset time. This creates a beautiful, soft blue hour light that is perfect for all skin tones and avoids the squinting often caused by the harsh morning sun.

5. Port Kembla Heritage Park
Often overlooked, Port Kembla offers a moodier aesthetic. With the heavy industrial backdrop of the steelworks on one side and the raw, rugged coastline on the other, it’s a location for families who want something different.
The Contrast:
The concrete bunkers and old military remains provide a neutral, grey palette that makes family outfits pop. If you are planning on wearing neutrals, creams, or earthy browns for your session, the textures at Port Kembla will complement your wardrobe perfectly without competing for attention.
Planning Your 2026 Autumn Session
When planning a multi-generational shoot, I always tell my clients to work from the oldest family member down. Pick a location that is comfortable for the grandparents first. If they are relaxed and comfortable, the rest of the family usually follows suit.
Try not to stress and never compromise your comfort. Neesh Photography offers Lifestyle Family Photography with the belief that photos taken at home, or where everyone is comfortable and familiar, make the most beautiful photos regardless of scenery.
What to Wear:
This is always a question clients have, and the answer is simple – whatever you like! But for Autumn 2026, I recommend a move away from matching white t-shirts. Instead, think about a tonal palette. Pick three or four colours that work together, like rust, navy, cream, and mustard, and distribute them across the family members. This creates a cohesive look that doesn’t feel forced. We can always collaborate on colour ideas based on the shoot location, so don’t be afraid to ask!
How to Book:
The peak of the autumn colour in the Illawarra usually hits between late April and mid-May. Because this is the most requested time of year, I recommend booking your 2026 date at least a month in advance.
