6th March, 2026
There is a certain peace of mind that comes from being well-prepared. Lately, I’ve noticed a real shift in my booking calendar: more and more people are jumping in early, reaching out 3 to 6 months before the event they’re planning. I’m not sure if these early-bird inquiries indicate any significant change, business-wise, but it’s a welcome change for sure. While I’ve intentionally steered clear of the high-stress world of wedding photography (except for a few low-stakes second-shooter gigs), I’ve always admired one thing about the wedding industry: the lead time.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind a last-minute request for photography! There’s something really fun and exciting about a plan that just pops up. But for most events, booking in advance is simply in your best interest because it gives you the luxury of choice. By reaching out early, you don’t run the risk of missing out on the exact experience, style, and pricing you’re after. When you book last minute, you’re often left settling for whoever happens to be free. It could still turn out great, of course, but if an event is truly important to you, it’s better not left to chance.
Happy New Year, by the way!
My first non-commercial gig of the year was for an awesome, organised client named Aus – a mum on a mission, if you will! Back in late 2025, Aus reached out to book a very special February birthday for her children. I thought this was brilliant. Planning a February event during the holiday season can be a nightmare if you leave it too late, but Aus had her vision ready to go.
Because she reached out early, we had plenty of time to discuss the details. Aus did her research and had seen my Family Lifestyle portfolio, noting that I have experience working with children. We chatted through the logistics: the balance of candid shots versus posed portraits, pricing, and most importantly, her values regarding privacy.
Aus was wonderful enough to specify her values regarding social media and marketing. She let me know which photos were fine to share and which were strictly for the family archives.
I always handle photos of children with extra care, and most “to post, or not to post?” moments are a matter of common sense. But with young families, seeking explicit permission is especially important – both in a legal sense and a human-to-human sense. After our shoot, Aus was so thoughtful as to share some privacy-approved photos with the venue, Adorable Pony Parties – Illawarra, and give me the thumbs-up to use those same photos for any marketing materials. I sincerely admire Aus’ effort to both protect her family’s privacy and extend her support for small local businesses. Win-win!
Unicorns, Fairies, and Five-Star Reviews
The party itself was pure magic. Is there anything more heartwarming than the pure, unbridled excitement of children surrounded by unicorns and fairies? Capturing those wide-eyed expressions at the pony farm was the perfect way to kick off my 2026 season.
After delivering the final album, I was touched to receive this review:
“Stunning photos! Tyneesha was so easy and lovely to deal with for family kids birthday event photos. Thank you so much for the wonderful service! We were very happy with the album.”
Thanks very much for a great start to the year!
